Armstrong

Armstrong states, “To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience”.  I find this interesting because it really makes me challenge what I previously defined as beauty.  In my opinion, beauty is something so visually powerful that it emotional inspires you.  What it inspires you to do is dependent upon the beholder.  Hence the age old saying, “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”.  Armstrong tried to stress the importance of the individuality of what someone finds beautiful.  This is shown when he writes, “… don’t get worked up trying to figure out which things are beautiful”.  By this he means that each person can find beauty in different experiences, whether that sense of beauty comes from another person, a picturezque sunset, or anything in between.  However due to social media constantly pushing the “perfect body” or “relationship goals” upon our youth, the common interpretation of beauty is becoming less independent and more of a cookie cutter interpretation of whats beautiful and whats not.  Which in my opinion is taking away from the sanctity of what I define beauty as.

Wonderful! I’m happy the reading challenged your thinking. What is the danger–what do we stand to lose–when we subscribe to a cookie cutter interpretation of what’s beautiful?
